Charlotte Adams
Artistic Director
Charlotte Adam's choreography has been described as "arresting" (New York Times), "gorgeous" and "delicious" (The Tucson Weekly), describing a style that combines Adams' signature wit and athleticism with an eye for the poetry of human foibles. In 2001, Charlotte Adams and Dancers premiered at New York's Joyce SoHo and was selected for return seasons in 2003 and 2006. Notable projects include: performances at the The University of Puerto Rico, San Juan with the Dance Knots Project 2013; the selection of Adams' choreography Dysphonia with composer Jason Palamara at the Triskelion Arts CollabFest 2015 in New York; a collaborative project with colleague Jennifer Kayle, Virtually Yours, presented by El Museo Centro Leon in Santiago, Dominican Republic and Highways Performance Space in Los Angeles 2010; GUSH, a shared concert with Kayle at Highways in 2015 presenting Adams' collaborative works with video artist Alex Bush (Five Rejections and a Funeral) and Palamara (Dysphonia); tiny dance Perpetuating Victoria performed by Dot Armstrong at the Breaking Ground Festival 2017; and commissions, re-stagings, and collaborations with artists, companies and dance programs in Tucson, AZ, Asheville, NC, Lincoln, NE, Forth Worth, TX, Montpellier and Toulouse, France, New York, Phoenix, and Iowa City.
Most recently Adams returned to the stage in her solo work, Imagining Ketchikan (Canciones del Corazon). She teamed with choreographer/dancers Beth Corning, Simone Ferro, Sara Hook, Heidi Latsky, Debra Loewen, Li Chiao-Ping, and Endalyn Taylor performing Dancing On the Ceiling, solo dances by women of a certain age. The concert was first presented at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to enthusiastic, sold out houses and critical acclaim in both cities. The tour continued through 2019 to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and to Pittsburgh, PA with Corningworks.
Adams began her choreographic career in Tucson, Arizona as a founding member of Tenth Street Danceworks. She received numerous grants from Arizona agencies for choreography and was awarded the $25,000 Arizona Arts Award. Under her direction the company performed throughout Arizona and in tours to New Mexico, Nebraska, Texas, North Carolina, and numerous cities in Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, Australia and Southern France. She received her MFA in dance at the University of Arizona in 1995. After directing the dance program for two years at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, Adams joined the faculty in the Department of Dance at The University of Iowa in 1998. She directed the undergraduate program and taught dance kinesiology, modern technique, choreography, and began a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training program. As Professor Emeritus, Adams has returned to Tucson pursuing choreographic projects and training yoga teachers with The Yoga Connection.
